The case of the Newham 8 involved eight Asian youth who defended themselves when threatened by plain-clothes policemen after numerous assaults on school children in the Newham area in 1982. They were later charged with conspiracy to assault persons unknown. The 8 youth were all acquitted in 1983 after a campaign, which drew links between the harassment and police violence experienced by the African-Caribbean and Asian communities. The AYMs mobilised nationally in support of this campaign. The campaign was run by Newham Monitoring Project.
